In a situation where you have an external web application that needs to retrieve information from an ERP system running on a local intranet, this solution in itself is not very efficient although it would work - say for instance you need to access a local database.

A better solution for these kind of scenarios, would be to use some form of RPC (REST, SOAP). If that ERP system is behind a firewall, then you will need a tunnel like has been described in this post.</description>
